Why Homogeneous Math Groups Help Students Thrive

Grouping students in math class is a common strategy, but there’s an ongoing debate: should groups be mixed-ability or homogeneous? While there are benefits to both, keeping math groups homogeneous—where students are grouped by similar skill levels—can provide powerful advantages for learning, confidence, and risk-taking, especially in elementary school.
1. Building Student Confidence

Imagine being a student who struggles with math, placed in a group with peers who pick up concepts quickly. You’d likely feel hesitant to speak up, worried about slowing the group down, or even embarrassed about making mistakes. On the flip side, a high-achieving student in a mixed group might feel frustrated, waiting for classmates to catch up. I have seen both of these scenarios and it does not make math enjoyable for anyone.
Homogeneous groups create a comfortable learning environment where students can work at a pace that feels right for them. Struggling students don’t feel overwhelmed, and advanced learners don’t feel held back. This structure boosts confidence because students see themselves as capable, making them more willing to engage and participate.
2. Encouraging Risk-Taking in Math
Math requires trial and error, and taking risks is an essential part of growth. But when students feel insecure, they’re less likely to attempt challenging problems or share their reasoning. In homogeneous groups, students are surrounded by peers who are at a similar level, creating a safer space for trying new strategies without fear of judgment.
When students see others at their level making mistakes and learning from them, they realize it’s okay to do the same. This fosters a growth mindset, where they view mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures. Having a growth mindset is essential for everyone learning new skills.
3. More Effective Instruction and Support
Teachers know that every classroom has a wide range of abilities, making whole-class instruction challenging. When students are grouped homogeneously, instruction can be targeted more effectively. Teachers can provide focused mini-lessons, assign work that matches the group’s current skill level, and offer appropriate challenges or scaffolds.

For example, a group that needs extra support with multiplication can work with manipulatives or repeated practice, while an advanced group can tackle word problems and multi-step equations. This differentiation ensures all students are progressing at a level that challenges them without overwhelming them.
4. Reducing Classroom Frustration
In mixed-ability groups, both struggling and advanced students can experience frustration. Those who grasp concepts quickly might feel bored waiting for others to catch up, while those who need more time can feel discouraged trying to keep up. This frustration can lead to disengagement and negative attitudes toward math. I have found that since I started using homogenous groups, students are excited about math and I rarely here “Ugh, Math!” anymore.
Homogeneous groups help prevent this. Everyone is working at a similar pace, reducing stress and allowing for a more focused and positive learning experience.
5. Opportunities for Growth and Movement

THIS is the MOST important part when grouping students in math… One misconception about homogeneous grouping is that students are “stuck” in one level. However, effective grouping is flexible. Regular assessments and observations allow students to move groups as they progress, ensuring they receive the right level of challenge and support at all times.
This movement motivates students—they can see a clear pathway for growth and have a tangible goal to work toward. It also helps teachers address individual student needs in real time. Math includes so many different skills and students can need extra support or extra challenges in different skill areas. It is important to remember this and make it clear to them that groups can, and will, shift throughout the year.

Math class should be a place where all students feel confident, supported, and challenged. By using homogeneous groups, teachers can create an environment that encourages risk-taking, builds confidence, and provides targeted instruction—all of which contribute to student success.
